Health and Beauty Newsletter - Winter, 2009
From your editors: Lois W. Stern and Patty Kovacs

Something New and Exciting!
Patty Kovacs, host of the Health and Beauty Revolution Show and I have joined forces.
My newsletter has now become our newsletter.
Patty and I are the first to say: We need to keep beauty in balance.
There is so much more to life
than just a fixed up face or body!
But we also know how much looking good can boost our moral - changing the way we act and feel.
As one of our monthly missions, we will do our best to keep you b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l-l-y informed.
Look for the heading: What's New? What's Hot? What's Not?
Another of our monthly features: A Beauty Tip That Won't Break the Bank
is meant to help us all during this time of
economic downturn.
Today we are facing some hefty challenges as we pass through this winter season: We watch our economy tank, unemployment
numbers soar and the value of our hard earned savings plummet. For so long we seem to have been living with a bigger is better attitude:
Bigger cars, bigger homes, bigger lifestyles. Perhaps something good can come out of this forced time for change – a time to live smaller, more meaningful lives.
So each month we will give you a hot new affordable beauty tip to brighten your spirits and possibly your face!
What's New? What's Hot? What's Not?
Although genes play a role in your appearance as you get older, the real villains of aging wrinkles involve
your behavioral choices.
In a study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons,
study researcher Bahman Guyuron, MD, chairman of the department of plastic surgery at University Hospitals, Case Medical Center
in Cleveland reveals how environmental factors and personal lifestyle choices more than genes can add years to a person's appearance.

Here’s Looking at You.
Huy Tu Nguyen, MD, and colleagues from the Harvard department of ophthalmology, conducted a study to determine how college age students
make judgments about the age and alertness of older people. In a study published in the February issue of Ophthalmology, the journal of the
American Academy of Ophthalmology, researchers say younger people seem to make judgments about the age and alertness of older folks by looking
into and around their eyes. Continue
Permanent Reduction of Fat Cells in a "Walk-in, Walk-out" Procedure
Sounds too good to be true? Let’s take a look at what is available today. Liposuction has been the traditional treatment of choice for the surgical
removal of unwanted body fat – that is until 2006 when SmartLipo arrived on the scene. SmartLipo is an FDA approved, laser-guided device for the
permanent destruction of fat cells. Whereas traditional liposuction is an invasive surgical procedure, SmartLipo is considered a minimally invasive treatment,
with rapid recovery and excellent results. Are these two treatments equally effective? In some cases, yes, in others, no. How do you know which treatment
is best for you?

UltraShape is a non-invasive form of body contouring based on focused, non-thermal ultrasound technology.
The device is designed to target and selectively
disrupt fat cells, leaving surrounding critical structures such as skin, blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue intact. The UltraShape procedure is
performed during a "walk-in, walk-out" session carried out in an office-based environment without the need for anesthesia or sedation.
Although over 100,000 patient treatments have been performed worldwide with reported “high patient satisfaction”, the FDA has not yet approved
UltraShape for use in the USA.

Lipodissolve involves a series of medicated injections to may melt away fat.
Lipodissolve medicated injections miight be an answer for melting away unwanted small, localized areas of fat such as those often termed love handles,
saddlebags and muffin tops. Lipodissolve is also known as mesotherapy, lipolysis, injection lipolysis or lipostabil. The ingredients used in lipodissolve
may vary depending on the doctor and the area being treated, but many of the frequently used individual ingredients in the typical chemical cocktail
are not FDA-approved.

Many new technologies are introduced with great fanfare, which ultimately disappear from the radar screen. Some have already been FDA approved as safe
and effective procedures. Others might become the future gold standard for fat reduction or, based on safety or results, might be shelved as a treatment that
disappoints. We just need to take a wait and see approach for those answers to emerge.
At-home beauty devices are becoming increasingly popular. MakeMeHEAL endorses three of these devices for the reduction of cellulite:
The Wellbox Lipomassage Cellulite & Fat Reduction Device is used by leading spas, plastic surgeons and celebrities. It is based on the most efficient
non-invasive professional technique cleared by the FDA for reduction in the appearance of cellulite. Learn more.
Nutra Luxe LIPO Reduction Infrared Body Shaping Massager Deep tissue infrared massage burns fat, creating body contouring and slimming results.
Lipo Reduction Massager reduces and prevents cellulite. The deep penetrating active ingredients in the Lipo Reduction Creme work in conjunction
with the massager to break down fat cells and promote increased circulation. The red light works in a range of 440 to 860 nanometers.

The new, new face lift
Women have been availing themselves of new faces since the dawn of plastic surgery, but suddenly it seemed that there was a better new face to be had.
There is a New New Face, very different from the old one, and Madonna is one who has it. Once you start thinking of it in these terms—the face as the
new handbag, say—you will start seeing New New Faces everywhere.

Beauty Tip of the Month
(A Beauty Tip That Won't Break the Bank)
Here is a great tip from the Duchess of Dermis, Michelle Martel: "Don't spend a lot of money on a product to exfoliate your skin.
It should be as simple as mixing a little fine sand
from the beach or baking soda from your kitchen cabinet with a mild facial cleanser to get a good result."

Something unexpected popped up in my Google Alerts this week. I don't know anything about this group,
but I love what they wrote!
"In her book Sex, Lies and Cosmetic Surgery, author Lois W. Stern gives us the stark and touching truth about what happened to her as a plastic surgery patient."
