What's New? What's Hot? What's Not?

Non-Ablative Lasers and Dermal Rollers - Which Treatment Should You Choose?
by Lois W. Stern
The basic concept behind both laser and dermal roller technologies is the same: wound and heal. One must wound the skin to remove old surface tissue, which in turn stimulates the growth of new collagen. The newer breed of lasers, known as nonablative fractional lasers, produce good results with minimal downtime. Fraxel is one fine example of these newer lasers. But you can also get good results with a simpler technology, the dermal roller. Laser or dermal roller - Which should you choose?

By Herbert P. Goodheart, M.D., Author of Acne For Dummies
Your skin is your protector that meets and greets your external world. Your skin is tough and it can take a lot of punishment, but some things can make it look bad and weaken it. Here are some actions that are harmful to your skin.

Beauty Tip of the Month

Boil a little milk, let it cool down, lift off the film that forms on the surface, and apply it to your face. Let it dry and wash off with this natural facial wash: 2 teaspoons of sea salt, 1 tablespoon, sesame or safflower oil, 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice. Exfoliates, stimulates, soothes all at once!

Personal Notes From Patty
Eating Makes Me Prettier

"As the autumn season cools the air and takes us indoors to nest, cocoon, and prepare for winter, I begin to observe my body differently. November is my birthday month and that also makes me look at myself differently, all too critically I find. I also see that turning 39 so many times I am slowly not beginning to believe my own lies. The body and face are changing, indeed. I am having to look at Life differently and learn grace in aging and good feelings about myself and this temple that has housed me for so many decades. I am going to promise myself a few things over the coming autumn days. I am going to observe the quality of food and drink that I take into my body. Is this food created by Mother Nature or was it processed making it capable of causing a breakdown in my body, emotions, and intelligence? From Earth to my Temple. If not from Earth, maybe I'll pass on it. Eating at home not only has the benefit of saving me money but also of knowing that my food was prepared in a healthy manner, with love. Do you know that the Native Americans always blessed the soul of the animal before eating the meat? Food has vibration. Gratitude and Love are excellent vibrational spices to add to the preparation of my food." Click here to read more of Patty's Promises to herself.
"I figure ... when I'm calmer, happier, and more serene, it shows in my face, my body, my posture, my smile. Therefore, when I experience a delightfully healthy meal, pleasurably prepared at home, served with kindness, and enjoyed in delightful conversation with loved ones, I actually feel... prettier. And I'm all for that!"

Personal Notes From Lois
Are We Falling Victim to Over Screening for Breast Cancer?

"Recent New York Times headlines would make us believe that this is so. I wondered if I was getting unnecessary treatment for an in situ breast cancer (a cancer that involves only the place in which it began and that has not spread)? I consulted with Dr. Lisa Sclafani, a highly respected breast surgeon from Memorial Sloan Kettering. Here are the facts she shared with me: Studies show that 10=20% of women with nontreated in situ cancers will have a return of cancer to that same breast. Of those cancers that return, 50% again will be in situ whereas the other 50% will be invasive. A course of radiation therapy cuts those statistics in half. A course of radiation therapy cuts that statistic in half. Do you want to gamble? The choice is yours. But screening gives us the choice. More from Dr. Sclafani next month."
