The Stem Cell Facelift: A Promising Plastic Surgery Innovation
By Lois W. Stern
The world of plastic surgery seems poised for innovation once again! How about a facelift without surgery? Sounds too good to be true? Stay tuned.
By lifting the ban on federal funding for promising stem cell research, on March 9, 2009 President Obama brought this highly charged topic to the forefront once again. Are Herbal Supplements Putting Aesthetic Surgery Patients at Risk?
NEW YORK, April 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire
For many people, the words "natural" or "herbal" are virtually synonymous with safety and purity. Products available over-the-counter without a doctor's prescription are often mistakenly believed to be free of significant risks. A report in the March/April issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal warns that more than 40% of plastic surgery patients use herbal supplements in the two weeks prior to undergoing surgery. By Robert Oliver, Jr, MD

After a number of recent high profile issues with prescription drugs, cardiac pacemakers, and vascular stents (devices used to prop open clogged blood vessels or fix aneurysms), the FDA is under the microscope. Caught up in all this is the fate of the next generation of breast implant devices, for which the FDA has been sitting on the manufacturers approval applications for nearly 3 years.

Cosmetic Procedures for Children Pose Ethical Dilemnas
by Medical News Today
More children than ever are undergoing medical procedures for nonmedical purposes-breast enhancement and liposuction, as well as "Westernizing" eye surgery for Asian children and cosmetic interventions to correct physical deformities. An essay in a recent issue of the Hastings Center Report examines what-if any-justifications there are for parents to consent to changing their child's physical appearance.

by HOLLAND COTTER
You may remember that the body, the return of beauty and fashion as art were big themes batted around in the 1990s. Last month they all reconverged with a clinical vengeance in a group show called “I Am Art: An Expression of the Visual & Artistic Process of Plastic Surgery” at Apexart, a nonprofit space in TriBeCa.
